University Industry Partnerships
The Directorate of Industry and Professional Partnerships (DIPP) was established on 1st April 2011 to coordinate all partnerships with Industry and Professional bodies in line with KPUC strategic plan 2010-2015.
The Directorate is divided into three sections, namely:
- College Industry Partnerships headed by a Deputy Director/SAR.
- Partnerships with Professional bodies headed by Deputy Director/SAR.
- Graduate Placement and Tracer studies headed by Deputy Director/SAR.
DIRECTORATE’S VISION, MISSION, MOTTO AND CORE VALUES
These are drawn from the TUK Vision, Mission, Motto and Core Values and are re-stated as follows:
- Vision: To be an effective vehicle for collaboration with industry and professional bodies in facilitating quality education and training.
- Mission: To promote partnerships with industries and professional bodies in areas of training, applied research, joint ventures and graduate placements and enhance the synergy of the college and its partners in contributing effectively towards the realization of Kenya Vision 2030.
- Moto: Education, Training and Partnership for the real world of work.
OBJECTIVES OF THE DIRECTORATE
- To secure the input of industry practitioners and professionals into the training activities of the University college to ensure that the skills of the graduates meet the changing workplace requirements.
- To promote cooperation between the college and industries in the provision of solutions to industrial and business problems through jointly supported applied research.
- To promote the sharing of technological advances between the University college and its partners through facilitation of accessibility to equipment and training resources.
- To facilitate specialized tailor-made training for industry personnel in areas where the college has competitive advantage.
- To promote engagement in joint ventures between the University college and its partners to positively exploit the strengths of both partners to the economic advantage of all.
- To promote the image and interests of the University College and other stakeholders.
- To secure access to skill development facilities of industries to students and staff of the University college.
FUNCTIONS OF THE SECTIONS IN THE DIRECTORATE
The Directorate has three sections with varied functions as follows:
College Industry Partnerships. KPUC had over the years built a strong tradition of working closely with Industry in its training programmes, research and consultancy services. KPUC wishes to continue with this tradition and strengthen it more by involving industry in KPUC activities including lecturing at the University and participating in curriculum development as stakeholders. This section is aimed at spearheading continuous dialogue and interaction with industry in terms of collaborative initiatives.
Partnership with Professional bodies/organizations. The professional-oriented type programmes offered at KPUC calls on collaboration with professional bodies to accredit and recognize the graduates of these programmes. To this end, KPUC shall endeavor to collaborate with relevant professional bodies both locally, regionally and internationally for the benefit of the graduates and at the time of developing or reviewing the curricula.
Graduate Placement and Tracer Studies: KPUC takes special interest in her graduates and how they are performing on the job market. Also KPUC tries as far as possible to find possible placement for her graduates or guide graduates on how to create job placements. To this end, this section shall be responsible for such activities and also to continuously carry out tracer studies to establish in what areas of professional activities are her graduates.
POSSIBLE AREAS OF COLLABORATION:
- Proficiency training of KPUC students with training facilities of partnering industry.
- Short term in-service training of industry personnel at the college.
- Long term in-service and pre-service training to industry sponsored staff.
- Skill upgrading of college staff at facilities of industry.
INDUSTRY BASED LEARNING
- Providing opportunities for work experience attachments for University college students.
- Providing opportunities for staff of the KPUC to upraise themselves on the state of the art technology and practices in industry through work experience attachment.
INDUSTRIAL EXPOSURE/ACADEMIC VISITS
- Provision of access to facilities and processes of the industry to college students and staff through academic visits
- Company professionals may address students on issues of common interest.
- KPUC staff may work with a company during their sabbaticals to add value to the company’s work and also appraise their skills and knowledge on technology and practices of their professions/trades on some agreed arrangements.
- Company staff may also work with KPUC in areas of their specialization in order to improve on the relevance of skills developed at the college to industry requirements.
PART TIME TEACHING
- The policy of the college is that 25% of the teaching staff should be drawn from industry through part-time lecturing arrangement. This is to ensure that the college programmes and training processes are consistent with the needs of the workplace. The college wishes to formalize this arrangement by officially involving partnering industries in the selection and release of their staff for this purpose and also to participate in modeled part time teaching.
- The college has a faculty of very highly trained and experienced professionals in a variety of technological and business fields. The college intends to exploit this abundance of human resources to its advantage and to the advantage of industry and commerce. The college therefore seeks to enter into partnership with companies in need of consultancy services in areas of our strength and raise funds by also contributing intellectually to the growth of industry.
- Companies may sponsor research activities in areas of interest to them to be undertaken by staff and students of the college. The research findings may be applied to create joint ventures between the college and its partner company.
ACCESSIBILITY TO HIGH TECH EQUIPMENT TO PARTNERING COMPANY
- The college is in the process acquiring rapid prototyping equipment for production of various machine parts. Testing equipment in various technologies are also available. The college shall facilitate access to the equipment to the partners for either joint ventures or independent needs of the companies.
- The college may enter into joint ventures with partnering companies to provide services and/or produce goods for sale in areas where the synergy of both parties may result in enhanced profitability.
SUPPORTING PROJECTS THAT PROMOTE THE INTERESTS AND IMAGE OF THE PARTNERING COMPANY
A partnering company may support any of the following activities in areas where the interests and image of the company may be boosted:
- Donation of equipment
- Donation of library materials
- Establishment of buildings for special purpose such as library, laboratory, workshop etc
- Development of a syllabus in a specialized area of interest to the company
PROMOTION OF SCHOLARSHIP AND TECHNOLOGY
- A partnering company may also provide scholarships to students who excel in programs of interest to the company as a way of promoting scholarship, innovation and the development of technology in general.
- Support for bright needy students through establishment of bursary scheme.
CORPORATE IMAGE BOOSTING AND MARKETING
- A company may utilize various opportunities available at KPUC for purposes of marketing its goods and services and also promoting its corporate image. These include: Sponsoring graduation ceremonies, Technology exhibitions, Conferences, Publications, Creative activities and sports.
SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS UNION ACTIVITIES
- A company may support projects and activities initiated by the students in any way that may be appropriate for promoting KPUC endeavors. Such support may include but not limited to: funding of peace promotion activities, advertising in magazines, funding professional association’s activities, giving professional talks, funding social responsibility events etc.
